What is Spyware?
Spyware is software that is downloaded without
the users knowledge. It may record your passwords and financial
information and monitor websites you visit. It then saves
this information, or transmits it to another computer.
It's cousine, adware, monitors your consumer habits
and preferences, then bombards you with annoying popup
ads. Adware often hijacks your browser, alters your
homepage or search preference and prohibits you from resetting
the defaults. The term malware is often used to include
any software installed with a function or "hidden agenda"
not disclosed in it's documentation or burried in the fine
print of the user agreement.
How Do You Get It?
Spyware can be installed by any computer
administrator (employer, spouse, parent) or by opening email
attachments, downloading "free" software or from visiting
corrupted websites. Many "FREE" Spyware Scanners,
actually, install malware!!
How Do You Know You've Got
It?
Unfortunately, the most dangerous spyware usually
leaves no clue or evidence of it's installation. Often, the
only evidence is a decrease in system performance or hard drive
activity when the pc is not in use. Use a
reputable spyware scanner to scan your system
for malware.
How to Remove - Avoid
Spyware
Use a reputable specialized spyware
remover and anti spyware program to prevent future infections.
Spyware has become so sophisticated that anti-virus programs
can no longer get the job done. It requires a specialized anti
spyware program to adequetly detect and remove
spyware.
